Fish tank or fountain in the bedroom

Water features are among the most powerful feng shui tools, which is exactly why they’re traditionally kept out of the bedroom.

Short answer

Moving water (aquariums, fountains) is considered too active for sleep, and is traditionally said to stir worry. Move it to the living room or entrance; in the bedroom, use a calm water image or a blue accent instead.

Why water and sleep don’t mix

Water energy is flowing and active. In the living room or near the front door it’s associated with circulation and abundance; in the bedroom, which needs to be the most yin (still) room in the home, the tradition sees it as unsettling. Practically, pumps hum, filters bubble and tank lights glow.

Where to put it instead

  • The living room, especially the Career (near centre, as seen from the door) or Wealth (far-left) area.
  • Near the front door, facing inward.
  • Keep it clean. Stagnant water is the one thing worse than none.
