Plants in the bedroom: good feng shui or not?
Some sources say never put plants in the bedroom; others say they’re essential. The traditional answer sits in the middle: a little living Wood energy, placed thoughtfully.
One or two healthy plants in a bedroom are generally considered positive. Keep them away from the head of the bed, avoid spiky varieties near where you sleep, and remove anything that’s dying.
Both plans are scored live by the same rules engine we use on your own room. “Harmony” is a 0–100 layout score.
Why the advice conflicts
Plants carry active, growing Wood energy. That’s wonderful in a living room or office, and why some teachers keep them out of the bedroom, which should be restful. The balanced view: a small amount of Wood balances a room heavy in white, grey (Metal) or earthy tones, and a healthy plant adds life. A jungle beside the pillow is too much.
Choosing and placing
- Soft, rounded leaves (pothos, peace lily, calathea) over spiky ones (cacti, snake plant at the bedside).
- In a corner, or in the Family (middle-left) or Wealth (far-left) area of the room as seen from the door.
- Keep them healthy. A dying plant is worse than none.

Questions people ask
Are artificial plants OK?
Good-quality artificial plants add the colour and shape of Wood, but not the life. Dried flowers are traditionally avoided.
