Mirror facing the bed: what feng shui says
Few feng shui rules are repeated as often as this one: don’t let a mirror reflect you in bed. The good news is it’s nearly always a five-minute fix.
Traditionally, a mirror reflecting the bed keeps the room “active” when it should be resting. Move it so it doesn’t see the bed (inside a wardrobe door or on the same wall as the bed), or cover it at night.
Both plans are scored live by the same rules engine we use on your own room. “Harmony” is a 0–100 layout score.
Why mirrors and beds don’t mix
Mirrors are traditionally treated as water: they multiply and move energy. That’s why they’re welcomed in dark hallways and dining rooms, and why a bedroom, which should be the stillest room in the house, is the one place they’re used sparingly. Practically, a mirror catching movement or light in the corner of your eye at night can be startling, and many people simply sleep better without one in view.
Where to put a bedroom mirror
- Inside a wardrobe door. The easiest option.
- On the same wall as the headboard, or a side wall angled away from the bed.
- Beside the door but not facing it. Mirrors that face the entrance have their own rule (see mirror facing the front door).
- Can’t move it? Drape a throw over it at night, or use a mirror with doors.
Mirrored wardrobe doors
Sliding mirrored wardrobes opposite the bed are common in rentals. A tension rod with a light curtain, removable frosted film, or simply sleeping with the bedside lamp off so the mirror goes dark are all accepted remedies.

Is a small makeup mirror OK?
A small table mirror that doesn’t reflect the bed from where you lie is generally fine.
What about a mirror on the ceiling?
Traditionally a strong no over a bed, for the same reasons, amplified.
