The command position: where to put your bed
Almost every feng shui bedroom rule comes back to one idea: the command position. From the bed you should see the door, not sit in its path, and have a solid wall behind your head.
Place the bed so you can see the door from your pillow, ideally diagonally across the room, with the headboard against a solid wall and the bed out of the door’s direct line.

The three parts of the command position
- See the door. From the pillow, the door should be in view without twisting round.
- Stay out of its line. Not directly across from it (see bed facing the door).
- Be backed. A solid wall behind the headboard, not a window, gives the “mountain” of support.
Traditionally this mirrors choosing a house site with a hill behind and an open view in front. In practical terms, it’s a position where your body can fully relax because nothing can approach unseen.
Finding it in an awkward room
In most rectangular bedrooms the command spot is the wall diagonally opposite the door. When that wall has a window, radiator or wardrobe, try the next-best wall that still gives a view of the door, and accept a small compromise on one rule rather than breaking two. When the door is in the middle of a long wall, the side walls often work better than the far wall.
A mirror is not a fix here. Using one to “see” the door tends to create a different problem (see mirror facing the bed).
Renter-friendly adjustments
You don’t need to repaint or rewire. Moving the bed is free, and a padded or solid headboard adds support where a wall is weak. If the only good wall has a socket in the wrong place, a flat extension lead run behind the bed is fine.

Questions people ask
Does the command position apply to desks too?
Yes. The same idea applies to a desk: see the door, don’t sit with your back to it. See desk with your back to the door.
What if two walls both see the door?
Pick the one with a solid wall behind the headboard and no window, and the one furthest from the door. If they tie, choose the one that leaves both sides of the bed reachable.
Is the command position the same in every school of feng shui?
Yes. It’s a Form School principle, and both the Black Hat and Compass traditions treat it as the foundation. Compass School then adds which direction your head should point, based on your Kua number.
