Desk facing a wall: good or bad feng shui?

A desk against a wall is the default in small rooms. Whether it’s a feng shui problem depends on one thing: where the door ends up relative to you.

Short answer

Facing a blank wall isn’t a problem in itself; losing sight of the door is. If the door ends up beside or behind you, turn the desk to face into the room or add a small mirror so you can see the entrance.

A wall in front, a wall behind

Facing a wall limits your “bright hall”, the open space in front of you that feng shui links to vision and forward momentum. That’s the lesser concern. The real issue is the door. If facing the wall puts it out of sight, you lose the command position.

A mood board, a calm artwork or a window view in front of you softens the wall-facing effect a lot.

Fixes

  • Rotate the desk 90° so the door is in view.
  • Keep the wall in front interesting: art, a pin board, a plant.
  • Use a desk mirror if the layout is fixed.
