Clutter in the bedroom: feng shui’s first cure
Ask any feng shui consultant where to start and most will say the same thing: clear the clutter. It’s the cure that makes every other change work better.
Start with the door (it should open fully), then under the bed, then surfaces. Aim for furniture covering less than about 45% of the floor so the room can “breathe”.
Both plans are scored live by the same rules engine we use on your own room. “Harmony” is a 0–100 layout score.
Why clutter matters so much
Feng shui is about how energy, and people, move through a space. Clutter stalls that movement, and it carries a mental load: every pile is a small unfinished task. In a bedroom, the room meant for rest, that load is felt most.
Where to start
- Behind and around the door. A door that can’t open fully is traditionally the worst kind of clutter.
- Under the bed. Keep it clear, or limit it to soft bedding and linens, never old paperwork or exercise gear.
- Bedside tables. Lamp, one book, one meaningful object.
- The floor overall. If furniture covers more than about half the floor, consider removing a piece.

Questions people ask
Is under-bed storage bad feng shui?
Traditionally it’s best kept clear. If you need the space, store only soft, restful things like spare bedding, neatly and in closed containers.
