Sofa with its back to the door

Open-plan living rooms often float the sofa with its back to the door. Feng shui calls for support behind seating, and there are easy ways to add it.

Short answer

Ideally, place the sofa against a solid wall with a view of the entrance. If it must float, put a console table, a low bookcase or tall plants behind it to give it a “back”.

Why seating needs a back

The same “mountain behind you” principle that governs beds and desks applies to the main sofa. It’s where people relax longest, and an open space behind it, especially toward the door, keeps a subtle part of the mind on guard.

Fixes

  1. Move the sofa to a wall that sees the door.
  2. Keep the float but add a console, sofa table or low shelf behind it.
  3. Tall plants either side of the back make a soft “wall”.
